What is IPL photo rejuvenation?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a broad-spectrum light treatment used to target colour in the skin. Unlike a laser, which emits a single wavelength, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths that are absorbed by pigment (melanin) and blood vessels (haemoglobin). This makes it useful for treating sun damage, freckles, age spots, broken capillaries, facial redness and the general dullness associated with photoageing.
The energy heats and breaks down unwanted pigment and constricts dilated vessels, while the surrounding skin is largely left intact. Over the following days, treated pigment often darkens and rises to the surface before flaking away, leaving a clearer, more even complexion.
What to expect during treatment
A typical IPL session is fairly quick — often 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area. Your clinician will cleanse the skin, apply a cooling gel and fit you with protective eyewear. The handpiece is moved across the treatment area, delivering pulses of light. Most people describe the sensation as a warm, rubber-band snap.
Mild redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling are common immediately afterwards and usually settle within a few hours to a day or two. Pigmented spots may look darker (sometimes described as a "coffee grind" appearance) for several days before sloughing off. Downtime is generally minimal, which is part of IPL's appeal, though it's wise to avoid heavy makeup and sun exposure straight after.
Most people need a course of treatments — commonly 3 to 5 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart — to get the best results, followed by occasional maintenance. Results build gradually rather than appearing overnight.
Typical price ranges in Sydney
Pricing varies considerably depending on the clinic, the device used, the size of the area and the number of sessions. As a general guide only:
- Single session (face): roughly $150–$400
- Single session (smaller areas, e.g. hands or décolletage): roughly $100–$300
- Course of treatments (often discounted as a package): roughly $600–$1,500+
These figures are indicative ranges and will change over time. Always confirm current pricing directly with the clinic, and ask whether the quote covers the full recommended course or just one session.
How to choose a clinic in Sydney
Sydney has a wide range of skin clinics, medi-spas and cosmetic clinics offering IPL, so it pays to compare carefully. Consider:
- Reputation and reviews: Look at the volume and consistency of reviews, not just the star rating. Clinics like Freskin Beauty Clinic Sydney CBD, The Skin Philosophy, Ellumina Cosmetic Clinic, Bella Pelle Cosmetic Clinic and Beauty Affairs MediSpa CBD are among the well-reviewed options featured on this page.
- Practitioner experience: Ask who will perform your treatment and how experienced they are with IPL specifically, including with skin types like yours.
- Consultation and skin assessment: A good clinic will assess your skin, take a history and patch test before committing you to a course. Be cautious of anyone who rushes to treat without a proper consultation.
- The device: Different IPL platforms have different filters and capabilities. Ask which device they use and why it suits your concern.
Safety and AHPRA considerations
IPL is generally safe when performed by a trained operator, but it is not risk-free. Potential complications include burns, blistering, temporary or (rarely) lasting changes in skin pigmentation, and an increased risk of side effects in darker or tanned skin. People with very tanned or naturally darker skin tones may not be suitable candidates, and a reputable clinic will tell you so.
Regulation of IPL and laser devices varies between Australian states. In some states, operators require a licence or must work under specific guidelines; in others the rules are less prescriptive. Where a treatment is performed or supervised by a registered health practitioner — such as a doctor or registered nurse — you can check their registration on the AHPRA register (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) at ahpra.gov.au. This is especially important for any medical-grade or higher-intensity treatments.
Always ask about the clinic's training, qualifications and complication protocols. A trustworthy provider will be transparent about risks and realistic about results.
Questions to ask before you book
- Who will perform my treatment, and what are their qualifications and experience with IPL?
- Is my skin type and concern suitable for IPL, or would another treatment work better?
- Will I have a patch test before my first full session?
- How many sessions will I likely need, and what's the total cost?
- What downtime and side effects should I expect, and how do you manage complications?
- What aftercare and sun protection do you recommend?
Taking the time to ask these questions — and to compare a few clinics — will help you find a provider that's safe, suitable and right for your skin. Use this page as a starting point, then book a consultation to discuss your individual needs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does IPL photo rejuvenation cost in Sydney?
As a general guide, a single facial session typically ranges from around $150 to $400, while a full course (often 3–5 sessions) may cost roughly $600 to $1,500 or more. These are indicative ranges only — always confirm current pricing and what's included directly with the clinic.
Is there any downtime after IPL?
Downtime is usually minimal. Expect mild redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling for a few hours up to a day or two. Pigmented spots may darken and flake off over several days. Avoid sun exposure, heavy makeup and heat for a short period afterwards as advised by your clinician.
Is IPL safe for all skin types?
IPL is generally safe for lighter skin tones, but it carries a higher risk of burns and pigmentation changes for darker or tanned skin. A reputable clinic will assess your skin type and may recommend a patch test or an alternative treatment if IPL isn't suitable for you.
How is IPL regulated in Australia?
Regulation of IPL and laser devices varies by state, with some requiring operator licensing. Where treatment is performed or supervised by a registered health practitioner such as a doctor or nurse, you can verify their registration on the AHPRA register at ahpra.gov.au before booking.
How do I choose a good IPL clinic in Sydney?
Look at the volume and consistency of reviews, the experience of the practitioner performing your treatment, and whether the clinic offers a proper consultation and patch test. Ask which device they use and how they handle complications. Comparing a few well-reviewed clinics is a good starting point.
