What dermal fillers actually are
Most dermal fillers used in Australia are gels made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in your skin and holds onto water. When injected beneath the skin, HA fillers add volume, support sagging tissue and smooth out creases. Common areas include the cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds (the lines from nose to mouth), jawline, chin and under-eye hollows.
A key advantage of HA fillers is that they can be partially or fully dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you're unhappy with the result or if a complication occurs. Results are temporary, generally lasting somewhere between 6 and 18 months depending on the product, the area treated and your own metabolism.
What to expect during treatment
A first appointment should begin with a consultation. A qualified injector assesses your facial anatomy, discusses your goals and explains realistic outcomes. They should review your medical history, medications and any previous treatments.
The injection itself usually takes 15–45 minutes. Most modern fillers contain local anaesthetic, and many clinics also apply a numbing cream beforehand. You may feel pressure, pinching or mild stinging. Afterwards it's normal to have some swelling, redness, tenderness or small bruises that settle over a few days to two weeks.
Downtime is generally minimal — many people return to work the same day — but avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and excessive heat for 24–48 hours, and don't book fillers right before a major event in case of bruising or swelling.
Typical price ranges in Sydney
Pricing varies by clinic, injector experience and the volume of product used. As a general guide only:
- Per millilitre (1ml syringe): roughly $450–$900
- Lip fillers: commonly $500–$800 for a single syringe
- Cheek or jawline contouring: often $900–$2,000+, as multiple syringes may be needed
These are indicative figures and can change. Always ask for a written quote at your consultation, and be wary of pricing that seems unusually cheap — it can indicate diluted product, inexperienced injectors or pressure to add more than you need. Avoid 'buy now' discounts that rush your decision.
How to choose a clinic in Sydney
Sydney has a large and competitive market, from medspas to doctor-led cosmetic clinics. The clinics featured on this page — including Nova Cosmetic Clinic, MySkin Solution Clinic, Sky Beauty Cosmetic Clinic, M1 Med Beauty, Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia and others — have built strong review profiles, but reviews alone shouldn't be your deciding factor.
When comparing clinics, look for:
- A qualified, AHPRA-registered injector (see below)
- A thorough consultation rather than a hard sell
- Clear information about the product brand being used
- A clean, professional clinical environment
- Photos of genuine, natural-looking results
- Clear aftercare and complication-management protocols
Visit in person if you can, and trust how the consultation feels. A good injector will tell you when not to have treatment.
AHPRA and safety considerations
Dermal fillers are prescription medical products in Australia. They must be prescribed by a medical practitioner (such as a doctor or nurse practitioner), and the practitioner administering them should be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). You can verify any practitioner's registration for free on the AHPRA website.
From 2025, the Australian Health Practitioner regulator has tightened advertising and practice guidelines for cosmetic injectables, so reputable clinics should follow strict consultation and consent processes. A registered nurse should still work under appropriate medical oversight with a valid prescription.
While serious complications are uncommon, they can occur — including vascular occlusion (filler blocking a blood vessel), which is a medical emergency. Choose a clinic that has hyaluronidase on hand and a clear plan to manage adverse events. This is non-negotiable.
Questions to ask before booking
- Are you registered with AHPRA, and what are your qualifications?
- Who prescribes the filler, and what brand do you use?
- How many of these treatments do you perform each week?
- Can I see before-and-after photos of your own patients?
- What are the risks, and how do you manage complications like vascular occlusion?
- Do you keep hyaluronidase on site?
- What does aftercare involve, and who do I contact if something goes wrong?
- Is the quoted price all-inclusive?
A trustworthy clinic will welcome these questions. If you feel rushed, pressured or fobbed off, that's a sign to look elsewhere.
The bottom line
The 'best' clinic is the one with a qualified, experienced injector who listens to your goals, prioritises safety and produces natural results. Use ratings and reviews as a starting point, then book consultations, verify AHPRA registration and ask plenty of questions before committing.

Frequently asked questions
How much do dermal fillers cost in Sydney?
As a general guide, expect roughly $450–$900 per millilitre, with lip fillers commonly $500–$800 and larger contouring treatments running into the thousands. Prices vary by clinic and injector, so always get a written quote at consultation. Be cautious of unusually cheap deals.
Is there any downtime after dermal fillers?
Downtime is usually minimal. You may have swelling, redness, tenderness or small bruises that settle over a few days to two weeks. Many people return to work the same day, but avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and heat for 24–48 hours.
Are dermal fillers safe?
HA fillers have a strong safety record when administered by a qualified practitioner, and they can be dissolved if needed. However, complications like vascular occlusion can occur, so choose a clinic that keeps hyaluronidase on site and has a clear plan to manage adverse events.
Who is allowed to inject dermal fillers in Australia?
Dermal fillers are prescription medical products that must be prescribed by a medical practitioner and administered by an AHPRA-registered practitioner working with appropriate oversight. You can verify any practitioner's registration for free on the AHPRA website.
How do I choose the right filler clinic in Sydney?
Look beyond star ratings. Verify AHPRA registration, ask about the injector's experience and the product brand, review genuine before-and-after photos, and make sure the consultation feels thorough rather than a hard sell. A good injector will tell you when treatment isn't right for you.
